This is a visual representation of movement in Flathouse Quay, Portsmouth in 1974. All information & statistics I used were taken from reports written at the time to document all the ships, commercial imports & exports coming to Portsmouth from all over the globe.
The name FlatNav comes from the ‘Flat’ of FlatHouse Quay & inspiration from satellite navigation. Whilst completing this project I looked at admiral charts used for navigation at the time the information was documented. This is a modern representation of movement in the quay & modern navigation, as I know it – my Sat Nav.
My initial aim for this project was to create a ‘pattern’ representing Portsmouth. Inspired by flags & tartan – ‘pattern with meaning’. I completed this whilst studying at university in my final year.
I screen-printed this by hand, using 6 separate screens, each depicting different information. There are 2 versions of FlatNav an A2 poster & a folded version.
